FINALS WEEKEND 10th /11th SEPTEMBER 2022

With Maddy Gregson making 5 finals we had to start Finals Weekend with the Ladies Handicap being played on Friday Afternoon (Julie Jasper sportingly agreed to this change). Unfortunately for Maddy that was as good as it got, as Julie rattled up 18 shots to Maddy’s 2 after 10 ends, finally winning 25-8.

Fortunately, the weather for the weekend remained dry and improved, Sunday turned out to be a glorious day. An impressive effort by the Green Team meant that not only had the Green been mown but even the worms had been conquered and the green played wonderfully all weekend.

The Ladies Pairs was a one-sided affair with Angela Quinn and Maddy Gregson winning 25-9 against Janet Lewis and Glyn Harrington.

A similar story in the Men’s Pairs – a shaky start by Michael Link and Dave Birch left them 10-0 down after 4 ends and I am afraid it didn’t get any better for them with Allan Buchan and Tim Harrington running out comfortable winners 30-8.

Maddy Gregson beat Glyn Harrington in the Ladies 100 up, a 10, a 9 and 3 8s proving the beating of Glyn 106-64.

Stephen Webb (6) and Allan Buchan (5) contested the Men’s Handicap with Allan comfortably winning 21-12, a complete reverse of the Final 12 months ago won by Stephen 21-12.

Chris White and Bob Patis lost in the Open Pairs against Tony Holt and Derreck Sherress. Tony and Derreck played superbly and ran out comfortable winners by 2 sets to nil (5-3 5-4).

The Joan Pont Memorial Trophy was a good win for Tim Harrington and Maddy Gregson. Julie Jasper and Doug Marchant were level on the 15th end but fell away to lose 12-22.

The John Murdoch Memorial Trophy for Novices was won by Ray Martin; an early lead for Ray 18-5 after 13 ends and a great comeback from John Kingswood to get to 19-15 after 19 ends, when Ray eased over the line to win 21-15.

The Ladies Novices final was very close with Angela Quinn beating Mary Sampson. Angela was 9-4 down after 10 ends but then scored 2 4s and a 3 in the second half to win the game (21-18).

The Men’s 2 Wood pitted Derreck Sherress, with rented woods against Allan Buchan; Derreck prevailed beating Allan 16-8.

The Ladies 2 Wood pitched Julie Jasper against (crowd favourite) Barbara Wellfair! Barbara put up a good fight but succumbed 18-7.

In the Men’s Hundred Up, the match turned early on in this match after a nervy start with Allan Buchan scoring 10 on the second end after an 8 by Alan Hughes in the first. Alan then scored a 9 and 2 8’s and led 50-30 after 8 ends and held that lead until the end, Alan Hughes winning 107-83.

The Men’s Championship was disappointing for the spectators, as Michael Link couldn’t find his A Game against Tony Holt losing 5-21. Tony bowled superbly winning a trophy that he has coveted for many years.

Then we came to the Ladies’ Championship and had to wait for the last game on finals day for all of the drama. Maddy Gregson was off to a flyer scoring 8 shots to Julie Jasper’s 2 by the 7th end. Julie hit back making it 9-9 by the 11th end, then it was 12-12 by the 14th end and 17-17 on the 21st end. Maddy then led 19-18 on the 23rd end, but two 2s by Julie on the 24 and 25th ends secured the Championship.

This was a high-class match with both ladies consistently drawing 3 to 4 shots round the Jack.
